Admission is free. Nationally designated historic site. This Shonai clan school was built about 220 years ago and is located in front of Tsuruoka City Hall. It seems that the school was closed in 1896, and after that it was also used as Tsuruoka Prefectural Office, Tsuruoka Police Station, and Asahi First and Second General Elementary Schools.

This is old Japanese public school. Some of the buildings have over 150 years history. You can enter the hall, this is the beautiful and quiet place. You may feel ancient spirit of young elites.

Very interesting place. Here I could learn about Sorai-gaku, one of the way of study. One of the interesting thing I found is that the people in this area keep studying Rongo, ancient Chinese textbook in their own way. You can find some posts from Shonai students inside.
