This temple is located up a somewhat steep slope through a village, and is the only temple among the Shikoku sacred sites whose principal image is Maitreya Bodhisattva. I visited by bicycle, so I didn't have any problems, but if you were by car, the road leading to the temple next to the torii gate of Hachimangu Shrine was extremely narrow. It was founded by Kobo Daishi, and after being destroyed by fire during the war during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, it was apparently rebuilt during the Edo period.

I visited the 14th temple. Images cannot convey the flowing ground of Flowing Rock Garden. It was right next to the parking lot. The magnificent ginkgo trees are impressive and I'm glad I came in a good season.

A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect founded by Daishi Daishi. There is no main gate. There are stone steps made of natural stone, and the precincts have an elegant appearance with flowing water rocks that show off the rock surface. (Flowing Water Rock Garden) The main hall is also built on a rock. To the right of the main hall, there is a huge Araragi tree with a circumference of 8m and a height of 10m. (Araragi Daishi) *The only shrine in Shikoku whose principal image is Maitreya Bodhisattva.

Jōrokuji is temple 14 of the Shikoku 88 Temples Pilgrimage, and one of the most wonderful. Uniquely among the 88, the central courtyard is the natural rock on which the temple was built.
