Uwa Cultural Village Kaimei School

star

4.2 (82)

3-chōme-109 Uwachō Unomachi, Seiyo, Ehime 797-0015, Japan

This elementary school is marked by its modern appearance with western style arch windows set into a traditional Japanese-style wooden building. The school building, built in 1882, has a quasi-western design that the architects of the time made to resemble Western architecture. It's filled with the zeal for learning that the locals had during Japan's westernization during the Meiji-restoration.

As I was touring, I realized that the town of Uwa was a mysteriously open place upstream of the Hijigawa River, which was a rare sight. Perhaps because it is a geographically interesting place, I was convinced that there is a historical legacy called Kaimei School there.

It is a building where you can almost hear the laughter of the children who attended this school in the past. Even in Ehime, the people of Nanyo are said to be warm-hearted, and there are exhibits that give you a sense of their warmth. This is my second time coming here, and I feel nostalgic, as if it were my own alma mater.

It's an old school! There is so much material that it would take you an hour to look at it carefully. wonderful! You can enter by purchasing a common ticket at the Folk Museum across the street. Even though it was such a wonderful place, there were no tourists there even though it was the last day of the holidays.

The oldest elementary school and classroom in Western Japan from 141 years ago (1882) remain intact.✨Arch-shaped windows🪟, white walls give a sense of civilization and enlightenment.School schedule at that time➀Arithmetic (arithmetic)➁ Self-cultivation (morality) ➂ Gymnastics (physical education) ➃ Singing (music ♫) ➄ Calligraphy ➅ Reading, etc. In addition, exam questions from the time and hanging drawings from the early Meiji period (designated important cultural property by the country) are also on display. *The streets are traditional. It is designated as a historic buildings preservation district.

The townscape has a great atmosphere. There are many things to enjoy, such as recreated classrooms and old textbooks on display.
