Kitanosho Castle Ruins
1 Chome-21 Central, Fukui, 910-0006, Japan
Kitanosho Castle was a hirashiro. Its remains are located in current-day Fukui, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. As the castle lasted merely eight years, few records survive about it. It is known, though that it was built by Shibata Katsuie in 1575.

This is the ruins of Kitanosho Castle, built by Katsuie Shibata, about a 10-minute walk from Fukui Station. The area where Shibata Shrine is located is where the original castle tower was located. You can see the excavated stone wall. There is a statue of Katsuie Shibata as a warrior, his wife Oichi, and his three daughters (Chacha, Hatsu, and Go). Next door is Shibata Park, which is small but is a place of relaxation for citizens.

Visited on 2023.12.9. The residence of Katsuie Shibata. It is a historically important place as the final resting place of Katsuie and Oichi, but it is a shame that, perhaps due to the fate of the Heijo, once its role ended, it was put to good use and no trace of it was left. There are few ruins worth seeing. It would not be surprising if it would be more well-known if some notable remains remained.

One of my favorite military commanders, Onishibata One of the reasons I hated Hideyoshi so much was the attack on Kitanosho. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the most successful man in Japan, accomplished more than the rugged Katsuie Shibata, and many people probably like him. However, Hideyoshi also received two letters from Nobunaga's vassals, two of the most powerful, Nagahide Niwa and Katsuie Shibata, and was able to use his first surname, Hashiba. It makes me angry to think that perverted Hideyoshi attacked Oichi because he wanted to do something about it. It makes me angry to think that he was leering at Nobunaga's younger sister, the lord of the house. There is no Tarareba in history, but I wish Toshiie Maeda had been more solid. All nearby coin parking lots were cheap at 100 yen for 30 minutes.

Kitanosho Castle Ruins It is a part of Hokusho Castle built by Katsuie Shibata (?). Shibata Shrine, Kitanosho Castle Ruins Museum, and a park are all integrated together, and bronze statues of Lord Katsuie, Oichi no Kata, and the three Asai sisters are erected within the park. Personally, I don't think it's a place where you can really feel the historical atmosphere because there are ordinary buildings around it and the park is well maintained. According to the information on the website, this park was selected as one of Japan's top 100 historical parks in 2007.
