The landscape gem in Tokyo's Koto ward – even on a rainy day, it was magnificent. These gardens were a ‘lord’s playground’ back in the day…set out in what is called the sukiya style, with a pond inhabited by birds & turtles, with three small islands. Apparently, these rocks are from all over Japan…so a lot of work went into building this! What I found interesting is after an earthquake in 1923, this park was a refuge for the locals as fires tore thru the area! Lots of good coffee shops nearby, too.

We went down to Shirakawa ward to visit the Blue Bottle pour over coffee shop, but decided instead to visit the Gardens. It was amazing. All the hard work spent gathering trees, plants, moss and rocks, diverting river water into the pond really shows. 150+ years of continuous improvement and design make this like a visit to a Kyoto temple or shrine all within short distance of the Hanzomon subway line. City of Tokyo owns the parks so entry fee is inexpensive. And there is a.small tea house, food service available inside. Well worth a visit, views are spectacular and timeless.

Love this garden. The koi fish was a nice surprise and all of the ducks were napping in the pond. It has the most rock steps I’ve seen in a garden, so watch your footing. All of the gardens in Tokyo have reasonable admission price, but this was the cheapest I’ve ever seen at ¥150. It’s right next to an equally beautiful park too.

Very very beautiful garden. Highly recommended for serene stroll, some time to reflect, and admire nature's beauty. There were some cute wildlife such as ducks, cranes, turtles, and koi. Takes about 30 mins to 1 hour to explore, picture taking included.
