Excellent museum for train nerds like me! All era's covered from steam through to current Shinkansen! After reading another review I went on the weekend. Was very busy full of families and was pretty noisy, unexpected for a Japanese museum. I would try during the week as I think it would be quieter.

Fantastic museum and one of the lesser known gems of Kyoto. You can see the original 0 series Shinkansen from 1964, some beautiful steam engines, and tons of utterly fascinating and interactive exhibits about real travel. Highly recommended! Do this on the weekend and save the more touristy stuff for weekdays.

Truly remarkable museum, vast collection, clean & tidy, plenty interactive stuff to try & explore and they have indoor & outdoor play park for children. Restaurant also provide good food. Definitely must visit, you can spend around 2-3 hours here.

Was expecting to spend 2 hours at most, ended up staying there for 4 hours - and didn't even have the time to wait for a steam train ride. The list of exhibits is huge and impressive. I'm not a train enthusiast and yet I found the exhibits interesting and ended up spending a lot of time reading them (most of which have English descriptions). The turntable area is fantastic and contains a large collection of steam locomotives. Recommended for all ages.

This place was pretty fun to visit! Definitely a great place for children since they had a lot of activities that catered towards families. A lot of cool displays, and a timed diorama show throughout the day. It was cool that on top there is a nice rest spot on an observation deck, and from it you could see the railway with trains passing by (had a display that had the live times for trains which was neat).
