I must take my hats off to Mizkan Holdings for building this facility where it was able to showcase its rich history of spices and condiments which spurred the Renaissance of Japanese cuisine particularly the beloved sushi. I have yet to experience a museum as interactive as Mizkan and I had fun visiting it in all honesty. I was fortunate to be the last participant of the 3PM guided tour and I can say that the museum guide is full of enthusiasm explaining the history of the vinegar making process and how it was shipped from the city of Handa to all over Japan. My nihongo proficiency is still poor but there are English translated printouts of each spot so you wouldn't get lost in translation during the entire tour.

Exhibits are in Japanese. I was lucky enough to meet a guide who translated a few things into English. I took the short tour for 100¥. I loved the table where you smelled the vinegar samples and attempted to guess which one it was - that was fun. The walk to this museum and the walk around the surrounding canal was wonderful.

Great way to spend a few hours! The presentation has high tech effects similar to a Disney World exhibit, and you will learn a lot. Free samples were given at the end. Make reservations in advance.

Mizkan Museum: ¥300 admission for a 70-min tour + 20-min on-sight experience. Advanced reservation required. Amazing facility with great displays. The staff are super friendly. They really made sure their visitors had a good time and always offered to take pictures. If you happen to be in Handa City, definitely stop by for a visit.
