There are only ruins left and the walls. You have to imagine the rest. It is right in the middle of the city and offer an amazing viewpoint on the neighboring mountains. Not worth a train trip though. If you are in Morioka you should visit otherwise no need to go out of your way.

If you come to Morioka you must walk the old castle grounds and enjoy the beautiful gardens in all seasons.

Breathtaking. Lovely. The first level is just a huge park with cherry blossom trees lined up at the sides of the walkway. The second level provides an overview of the entire park AND mt iwate afar.

The Morioka Castle is perhaps the most well known landmark to visit in Morioka. Please note you will not find an actual castle here. If you're from Canada, it's more of a city park with a few monuments. There is a totem pole from Vancouver Island here! There were two stray cats here. One of which followed us for nearly twenty minutes. The cat was adorable. We then entered the museum. The first floor has a few displays and videos from traditional Morioka festivals. They were all free to access. The museum on the second floor is paid entry, but I didn't enter as I wasn't in a mood to read that day. I highly recommend checking this area out!

The family visited this site enroute from Sendai to Aomori. There are parking lots available right below the park. The castle building is no longer there but there are remnants of its past like the stone walls and such. It’s interesting to have a slow stroll around the park, especially now that we are nearing the winter season. Some nice pictures can be taken around the castle ruin as well like there is a small bridge right at the centre. From one corner, I could actually see mount awate from a distance.
