A local museum dedicated to commerce interchanges of the city with other countries from the 16th to 19th centuries and covering what made the city special for such a long period. A needed 'other view' of Nagasaki to that covered by the atomic bomb museum. Limited english explanations is a drawback.

An interesting museum tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. The museum is divided into two zones. There is a permanent exhibition of artwork, historical manuscripts and handicrafts; illustrating Nagasaki's rich history serving as Japan's window to the rest of the world during its period of isolation. There are sections dedicated to the trade and cultural exchange with Korea, China and the West, in particular the Netherlands. The other zone consists of the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office which was reconstructed based on historical drawings and which can be accessed from the side of the building. I really regretted going to the museum in the late afternoon. I was only able to finish touring the permanent exhibition (which took almost one and a half hours) before closing time.

So I got the special exhibit ticket for 1300¥ I was surprised and disappointed it only covered the 3rd floor and not the second or first. The exhibit was interesting and nice, but I wanted to learn about Nagasaki, not India, so much. Live and learn, I guess. If you want access to the 2nd and 1st floor, don't get the special exhibit, assuming it'll grant you access to the whole museum.

Excellent museum well worth a visit. While visitors might focus on the atomic bomb museum, this very well curated and presented place looks more at the rich trading, history and cultural importance of Nagasaki. The buildings are beautiful, exhibits informative and varied and many descriptions are in English. They also include some real examples of the commodities that were traded, building mock-ups and plenty of models. Also some good interactive and on-demand displays using a variety of technologies. Staff were friendly and helpful and spoke some English. Entry fee also very cheap! Highly recommended.

I had medium expectations and was pleasantly surprised! This museum, with interacting exhibits paints a vivid picture of Nagasaki from the 17th to 19th century, centered around trade and the connections between the city and the world. The beautifully reconstructed traditional building at the back is also very impressive.
