The Temple’s full name is Komyo-ji Kongo-in Nankobo; it is the only temple on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage route that has the character “bo” (meaning a priest’s or monk’s residence) as part of its name. The Temple was established as a Buddhist temple associated with the Oyamazumi Shinto Shrine, at which worshippers pray for the safety of people traveling by sea.

I visited you on a bicycle pilgrimage. Nankobo is located in the center of Imabari City, and there was a heavy gate on the side of National Route 317, which has a lot of traffic. The gate of Nankobo was guarded by the Four Heavenly Kings: Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten, and Tamonten. A road ran between the main hall and the main hall, and a parking lot was also located between the main hall and the main hall. Betsugu Oyamazumi Shrine, which is closely related to Nankobo, is adjacent to it. Betsugu Oyamazumi Shrine is said to have been built in 703 (Taiho 3) as a separate shrine to Oyamazumi Shrine, Iyo Ichinomiya Shrine, located on Omishima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is said that Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima Island was originally a temple, but it was inconvenient to travel to the island to visit. During the Kamakura period, ``Betsugu Oyamazumi Shrine'' became the front shrine, and it is said that the current Nankobo temple served as a Bettoji temple and was in charge of Buddhist sutras. The principal image is Daitsuchi Shonyorai, the only principal image in the Shikoku sacred place. Nankobo's Daishido is said to be a building that survived the ravages of war, along with Konpirado, when most of the temple grounds were destroyed by air raids during the Pacific War. Numerous incendiary bombs were dropped on the temple grounds, but some of them slid down the roof of the Daishi-do Hall. It is reported that all evacuees inside the temple were safe.

This temple is very open and old. It is huge in scale but very easy to get to. No mountains, hills, stairs....It is close to many places to eat and stay the night.

This is the 55th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Tour. It is located in the center of Imabari city and is very easy to find. The imposing Sanmon gate can be seen from the main street, and the main hall and Daishi-do hall are located across the road in the back of the precincts. Parking was free. There is also Oyamazumi Shrine.
