This shrine established in 1880 is located north of the Nanshu Cemetery, the final resting place of Saigo Takamori and many who died fighting on his side in the Satsuma Rebellion. It enshrines Saigo and his fellow casualties of the Satsuma Rebellion. The Nanshu Cemetery, a designated historical site of Kagoshima Prefecture, originally interred the remains of Saigo Takamori and 39 other individuals. The bones of another 224 supporters of his cause were reinterred there in 1879. Rebels killed outside of Kagoshima Prefecture would also be reinterred at the cemetery four years later, bringing the total number of interred individuals to 2023. The shrine was officially recognized in 1922 due to the increase in the number of visitors.

It's been a while since I visited. I had a refreshing feeling that I was being watched over by Sakurajima, Saigo-san, and other Kagoshima seniors. Since it's nearby, I'll visit you again (^o^).

See how the Kamikaze Pilots lived their last days before their final mission. Wish there was more English translating here. Be sure to also see the Samurai village if you are out here. Got here using the local bus. Cost a little over 1000Y by bus

This is a shrine I’ve always wanted to visit ever since I saw Saigodon! Since it was a weekday, there were almost no people! There are many graves, and I got goosebumps when I saw Mr. Saigo's grave. I saw many graves and read the explanations and felt the history❗️The view of Sakurajima was also amazing! I also received a Goshuin stamp and bought a Goshuin book as a souvenir. I recommend going at least once.

It is awe inspiring. You have to go, it's an experience I can not describe.
