3 hours is still not enough. Best Museum in town, you can see through all of the history of Kagoshima. In the other way, how japan become the greatest of Asia.

One of the best history museums I have been to that is dedicated to the story of Kagoshima for the past 5000 years. They have English translations of key signs and artifacts and are on the grounds of an old castle for which the gate and walls still stand. We spent over 2 hours and felt we had to jump over some parts. Full of artifacts and knowledge.

Informative and entertaining museum that gives the history of southern Kyushu from prehistory to modern times. Plenty of English was available in English for context and history, though more information (perhaps with QR codes) about individual artefacts would have been nice, as little was available in English. Entry was affordable and spent an easy 2 hours here: recommended if interested in the history of the city and the region.

Large and expansive museum which goes into a bit too much detail about local history. It has strong English, Korean and Chinese translations. Costs 400 yen to enter or 300 with one of the local bus passes. Some photography is allowed but most of the time no

The other exhibitions might be ok but just visited the dinosaur exhibit (大恐竜展) which was small, very overpriced at (1400 yen) and a terrible concept: not enough information for adults and not enough hands on exhibits for kids. Despite lots of posters advertising different dinosaurs in CGI there is only one small video of a T Rex on loop. The whole thing feels just like a way to fleece money from parents. They were selling toy dinosaurs for up to 5000 yen or more but had nothing for sale of interest to adults. There was also no information in English (except for dinosaur Latin names) and a no return policy should you leave one of the two rooms which seems extremely harsh considering the exhibit seems aimed at kids but I didn't see any toilets in there. Almost all of the few dinosaurs in the exhibit were constructed with fur and brightly coloured. I'm not sure this is in line with Western ideas or not but looked too gaudy to be anywhere close to natural. In case you want to visit this museum and the price seems high, I recommend to avoid it and spend your money elsewhere.
