I think we were so lucky arriving when there were so few people around, Yes it was winter but that meant we ha this beautiful temple and surrounds virtually by ourselves. It is the head temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism and was founded in 766 by the Buddhist monk Shōdō Shōnin. been guided to the site by a vision of the bodhisattva Kannon. The temple complex consists of several buildings, including the Sanbutsudo (Three Buddha Hall), the Hōtō (Main Hall), and the Yōmeimon Gate. Just leave a lot of time to explore and enjoy and wonder about all the monks who have been and gone. Or have they???

Our green bus dropped us right next to Rinno-ji Temple. Rinno-ji is the most important temple, housing large, gold lacquered, wooden statues of Nikko's three mountain deities. The goshuin counter is at the back of the building with another counter near the treasure house for those seeking them.

The temple and its surroundings were even more breathtaking with the cherry blossoms still in bloom. Unfortunately, we weren't able to enter the red building, but taking a leisurely stroll and immersing ourselves in the peaceful ambiance was well worth the visit. We parked our car near the bridge and enjoyed a pleasant 10-15 minute walk up to the temple.
