Takase stone Buddha
Takase, Oita, 870-1142, Japan
Takase Stone Buddhas is one of the important old stone buddha sculptures curved into the inner wall of a cave in Oita, Japan. It is located in the cave curved into the cliff of a hill of volcanic tuff. In general, because the cave is currently protected from rain and direct solar radiation by the roof shelter and waterproof treatment, the Buddhas is well conserved and no currently ongoing weathering can be clearly observed.

Although it is a local spot, it is quite impressive when you think about how it was created a long time ago, and it is extremely rare. It seems like not many people visit.

You can walk to the stone Buddha from the parking lot. Although the guard dog of the house in the foreground will bark at you, the site is in a quiet area, so you can take your time to admire the stone Buddha. It's a quiet place.

It was a small stone Buddha, smaller than I expected. However, you can see it quite close up, and there are detailed explanations, so it was worth seeing. However, I feel like it's for adults who like this kind of thing. I think it's a wonderful cultural property, but...

A stone cliff Buddha from the late Heian period that remains in Oita City. There are five statues of Buddha carved out of cliffs inside a 1.5m deep cave, and the bright vermilion color suggests that it is in a good state of preservation. Among them, the most eye-catching statue on the far left, with a snake wrapped around its body and a skull and crossbones necklace, stands out in an unusual shape. This is the guardian deity that appeared when Sanzo Hoshi went to Tenjiku, and the girl's face painted on his stomach seems to represent his inner gentle feelings. Also, on the wall immediately to the right is the ``One Root and Three Stems Buddha'', a statue of the Amida Triad carved out of a lotus flower that has branched into three parts from a single lotus stem. Since this is not inside a cave, it is severely weathered and I would like to see some sort of treatment done to it. Although it is not large in size, I really like the statue because of its unusual shape, its well-preserved condition, and above all, the sense of strangeness and surprise of seeing such a wonderful statue in such a place.

Enter the narrow road next to a private house. It's a narrow road, so it's best not to enter by car. The stone Buddha is brightly colored and seems to be in good condition. I recommend it, but it's small, so if you have time, you should definitely visit.
