Gassantoda Castel ruins are one of the most popular historical sites in Shimane Prefecture. This place is mainly associated with the history of 17th-century samurai warfare. The premises are well managed which has created a very conducive environment for tourists.

(castles visited 50+) Wow. This one was amazing! Parking was easy and straight forward to find. A map that made sense. The "100 castle stamp" was easy to find. This is a super unique castle. The san, ni, and hon maru are squeezed along the top of a very skinny mountain peak. Expect a hike. About 1.5km each way I think from the parking lot. Half of it is steep.

Fantastic views all around! Steep climb up steps but worth it.

Fun hike and amazing views! Beyond the raised platforms not much remains of the old mountain fortress. But the hike is not too difficult and is well paved. Easy access from the museum at the bottom and you can take the return bus to Yasugi station right out front.
