I took a walk on October 11, 2023. It was originally the residence of the Daihoji (Muto) clan and was called Daihoji Castle. During the Tenbun era (around 1533), the castle was destroyed by war, and the Muto clan moved their residence to Oyama's Onoura Castle, which later became a branch castle. In 1587, Tensho 15, Yoshiuji Muto, who was known as Akuyagata, was betrayed by his subordinate Maemori Kurando and committed seppuku at the age of 33 and died. After that, Shonai became the territory of the Uesugi clan. In 1601, the 6th year of Keicho, Yoshimitsu Mogami conquered Shonai. In 1603, the 8th year of Keicho, Daihoji Castle was restored by the Mogami clan and became the retirement castle of Yoshimitsu Mogami. When Tozenji Castle in Sakata was renamed Kamegasaki Castle, Daihoji Castle was also renamed Tsurugaoka Castle. In 1622, 1622, the Mogami clan was abolished, and Tadakatsu Sakai came to rule Shonai from Matsushiro, Shinshu. In the Boshin War, he fought on the side of the shogunate and surrendered. Shonai Shrine was built in 1875 on the site of the main enclosure. The deities enshrined are the first Tadatsugu Sakai (chief of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa vassals), the second Ietsugu Sakai (participated in the Osaka Campaign), the third Tadakatsu Sakai (from Matsushiro in Nagano Prefecture to Shonai), and the ninth Tadanori Sakai (founded Chidokan). ) are the four pillars.

It's pretty. We are doing the 100 Japanese castle stamp rally. How annoying that this place keeps the stamp inside so you can't just visit after hours, get the stamp and continue on your way. Had to stay overnight in this town just to get the stamp.

A nice stop during our road trip. The museum admission is free next to the shrine, the displayed artifacts really piqued my interests.
