Uwajima City Date Museum
9-14 Gotenmachi, Uwajima, Ehime 798-0061, Japan
The Date Museum commemorates the Date Clan, who ruled over Uwajima for more than 250 years during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The museum exhibits many artifacts and belongings of the Date family, such as weapons, scroll paintings, family crests, writings and daily-used items. It showcases a sizable collection of beautiful folding screens (byobu) that bear precious paintings. Maps depicting Uwajima in the past enable visitors to see how the castle town has been reshaped over the years.

The first stop on the second day of my first trip to Shikoku was #Uwajima City Date Museum. Exhibits include ancient documents, armor, and wedding furnishings from the Date family, which ruled Uwajima. In addition to the permanent exhibitions displaying valuable cultural heritage, special exhibitions are also held, allowing you to get a feel for the daimyo culture of the Uwajima Date clan. This time, I asked the curator for an explanation and toured the museum. Photography was prohibited inside the museum, except for a few areas.

I thought it was a fairly minor museum about the Uwajima Date family, but there were quite a lot of exhibits and I enjoyed it. Hidemune Date is rarely featured in historical dramas or games, and not much is known about what kind of person he is. You can get a glimpse of that person in this museum. It is possible to take photos of some exhibits inside the museum.

This is a museum related to the Date family of the Uwajima domain. I was surprised to learn that the founder of the Date family of the Uwajima domain was Date Hidemune, the eldest son of Date Masamune. I knew most of Date Masamune, but I learned a lot because I learned the background of why his eldest son, Prince Hidemune, came to Uwajima in Shikoku instead of Sendai, even though he was an illegitimate child. There are various materials, tools, etc. related to the Uwajima Date family, so we recommend a visit in conjunction with the nearby Tenshaen Garden.

The museum is located on the site of the Date family residence, and there is a Date family nameplate on the gate. In front of the entrance, there were the remains of a meeting place for Date Muneki and Saigo Takamori, and some of the Kairakuen ruins remained. Inside the museum, you can wear a helmet and a jinbaori, You can take photos in front of the door with the large family crest. Parking was free.

This is a museum related to the Date clan of the Uwajima domain. Although it is within walking distance from Uwajima Station, it is slightly far away. If you take a bus, Higashiko-mae bus stop was the closest. I got the impression that the main focus was on displaying weapons rather than historical explanations. However, it was unfortunate that photography inside the exhibition was prohibited. As you proceed through the building, you will come across stairs. There seems to be a lift facility, but there was no elevator. There seems to be a plan to relocate it to the adjacent Tensha Park, so I guess it will be barrier-free if that happens, but I wonder if it will stay the same until it is relocated.
