Wakasa Onigajo is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles. The castle is easy to tour as you can drive up to the main enclosure, but since you're here, we recommend climbing from the base. You can reach the castle area in about 30 to 40 minutes from the lower Hachiman Square. Although the mountain trail is well-maintained, the slope is quite steep, and before you reach the castle, you almost have to climb directly up the ridge, so I thought it was quite a challenging castle to climb. Altitude 452m (relative height approx. 250m) Although the castle area is not large, it is an entirely stone-built castle with a considerable amount of stone walls remaining, although it was demolished under the One Country, One Castle Law. In particular, the stone walls around the main enclosure, the hexagonal stone walls, and the stone walls from Akatemon to the parking lot are spectacular. Wakasa Onigajo was built by the Yabe clan during the Kamakura period, and was the residence of the Yabe clan for generations, but the castle owner changed hands from the Amago clan to the Kinoshita clan to the Yamazaki clan, and the castle was abandoned in 1617. Wakasacho itself is not an easy place to get to, but I personally thought it was a wonderful castle.

It takes about 10 minutes from Wakao Station to reach the castle gate, and it takes about 45 minutes from the castle gate to reach Honmaru. The stone wall has the Honmaru, Ninomaru and Sannomaru remaining, and there is also the hexagonal stone wall in the shape of a hexagon. The view from Honmaru overlooking the streets leading to Tajima and Harima is very beautiful.

100 famous castles There is a parking lot (about 4 cars) During the summer, a hypothetical toilet is located in the parking lot. The stamp is in the second circle Pamphlets and castle seals are available at the tourist information center in front of the station, so we recommend stopping by first before climbing the castle. The stone walls of Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru are all well preserved, and the view from Sannomaru and the castle tower is outstanding. As soon as you go down from the parking lot, there is a hole, and if you go forward, you can open the fence to prevent animals and enter the castle ruins. Suddenly there is a stone wall made of stone steps! That's excellent! I’m excited 😄 If you go around the stone wall with hozuki steps to the left, you will see the Ashi-temasugata Koguchi, and the Honmaru stone wall is on the right. There were large stones scattered around, and I thought it was the ruins of a destroyed castle. After passing there, look to the left at the next Masugata Koguchi and go straight to Ninomaru. Go down the Masugata Koguchi and walk up the slope for a while until you reach a hexagonal stone wall. There is a pavilion in front of the hexagonal stone wall, and the stone wall is below it. An earthwork remains on the left hand side of the arbor. You can easily get to the top of the mountain by car. There are some parts that are full of rocks and slippery, so I recommend wearing trekking shoes. In the summer, you need drinks too.

Great hike to some old castle ruins. If you're in wakasa and have already seen benzaiten, come check this out. There's a trailhead to the right of the town hall, or you can follow the road up from the other direction.
