star

3.8 (114)

Japan, 〒753-0071 Yamaguchi, Takimachi, 1−1 県政資料館 2階

This museum was completed as a prefectural government office building in 1916. It displays documents about the Yamaguchi prefectural government. The main rooms are characterized by a bold adoption of Japanese and Oriental traditions and the latest European and American designs in detailed design, such as the ceiling center decorations, sculptures using curves and dimensions, and woodworking techniques around the doorway frame and ceiling. It is now open to the public as a prefectural government library along with the old prefectural assembly hall, and is also used for filming movies.

I was really looking forward to visiting, but compared to the Capitol building, the walls and other parts were in a state of deterioration, giving me a lonely impression. It was dusty and had a musty smell. It's such a wonderful building that I would like it to remain forever, but as it stands now, its charm has been halved. I wonder if it's difficult to maintain and manage if it's free. . .

It is divided into exhibition rooms for each theme related to Yamaguchi Prefecture, just like the prefectural office building at the time. The museum has a wide range of exhibits and is more impressive than expected.

Construction of the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum (former prefectural government building and prefectural assembly building) was started in 1912 and completed in 1923. The design was carried out by engineers Goichi Takeda and Yoshikuni Okuma, who later became members of the National Diet Building's design staff, under the guidance of Dr. Yorihiro Tsumaki. It was designated as a national important cultural property on December 28, 1981, as a valuable building that brings together the essence of Taisho architecture, which is a fusion of modern Western architecture and traditional Japanese style. The exterior is reminiscent of romantic buildings from early modern Western Europe, centered around a raised central roof, emphasizing the symmetry of the middle and high floors, the lower floors of both wings, and the horizontal line, maintaining stability, dignity, and elegance as a whole. In addition, the detailed design boldly incorporates Japanese and Oriental traditions as well as the latest European and American designs. In particular, the ceiling decorations in the main rooms, the carvings using curves and surfaces, and the woodwork around the doorways and ceilings have a craft-like feel and express a sense of stability and staticity. You can tour the Taisho retro building for free. Although you cannot enter at night, it looks quite majestic when illuminated by lights. Rurikoji Temple is also nearby, so please enjoy the illumination of historical buildings.
