Matsushiro clan bell tower

During the Edo period, there was a rule in the Matsushiro domain to ring a large bell every hour (approximately 2 hours), regardless of day or night. The feudal samurai and the people of the castle knew the time and managed their time from this "toki no kane". This bell tower was built along with the fire tower in 1624 (Kanei 1), shortly after the first lord of the domain, Nobuyuki Sanada, joined the clan. After that, it was destroyed by three major fires, and the current bell tower was rebuilt in 1801 (Kyowa 1) and restored in 2012. It has been designated as a designated cultural property (building) by the city.

I used to take the Nagano Sanada Line often, but I didn't know it had a bell tower. From the Nagano Sanada Line, enter the road where Kanbayashi Clinic and Aoba Pharmacy are and turn left. I discovered it while walking on a road that is difficult to access by car.

Visited in May 2019. Not only was it the bell tower of the Matsushiro clan, but it is also said to be the place where Sakuma Shozan and others conducted Japan's first telegraph experiments. There is no parking lot, but the sidewalk in this area is fairly wide, so it seemed OK to park so as not to get in the way.

I found it by chance while strolling through the streets in the center of Matsushiro Town. I honestly thought it was amazing that a building with such a magnificent bell still remained. The building was surrounded and could not be entered. Legend has it that this is the place where Sakuma Shozan conducted Japan's first telegraph experiment.
