19 Shiroyamacho, Kagoshima, 892-0853, Japan

This cave is where Saigo Takamori spent his last days with the administrators of his private school during the final stages of the Satsuma rebellion after returning from fighting numerous battles around Kyushu in 1877. They spent the six days from September 19th through 24th in this cave. It is a vital historic landmark as the site where Saigo lead the Satsuma army at the Battle of Shiroyama against the government military until the end. It was designated as a historic landmark of Kagoshima City in 1974.

If you happen to drive past, you can stop. But it just a whole in a wall. The historical facts disolayed can be googled. You do not need to be there to connect the dots.
