Tranquil, beautiful little temple, especially in autumn. Great place to avoid the crowds. This temple is one of the hidden gems in Arashiyama that not too tourists visit. It's was actually a nanery dated back since the 12th century. It was named after "Gio", A dancer who fell out of favour with a powerful lord and escaped the capital to be come a nan. Although it is small, the garden is packed with mossy green ground and maple tree and located on a slope of a mountain. You will only need 15 mins to walk around the temple, but it may take longer if you want to sit and soak in the atmosphere. The ticket cost 300 JPY. Note : We visited in November, and there was Saga Chrysanthemum flower on display. This brush like petels flower has been exclusively cultivated in Daikakuji Temple, so it was rarely seen.

A very small temple with a beautiful background story of an unrequited love. The scenery differs somewhat from the other temples in that it features dense thickets of moss on its grounds. The thatched roof is also unique. It is particularly worth a visit if you take a walk from the Otagi Nenbutsu north of Arashiyama back to Arashiyama. It takes just about ten minutes for the sake of photo taking.

The garden features diverse moss varieties and is small yet intricately designed. It's not overrun with visitors.
