Awesome place to visit with great views over the bay. The temple looks magnificent. It was not crowded and so lots of photo opportunities. Easy to get to from the local station. Felt very spiritual and leaned about the history of the shrine.

Japan national treasure Zuiganji temple. Be sure to cross over to the coastline to capture the Matsushima formations. For the history buff the paid main entrance side features golden interior where the Meiji emperor stayed overnight. No photos allowed, but quite worth the 700yen ticket price. Popular spot for tourists, Matsushima is one of the three sightseeing places that represent Japan. The other two being Itsukushima in Hiroshima (the Torii in the ocean) and Amanohashidate in Kyoto (sandbar).

This place is amazing. On a small island connected via a red wood bridge, this temple is exquisite and is one of the few of the original constructions. Very ornate, facing the sea, amidst pine trees. A must see on each visit to Japan

Come here right after your boat tour, working towards Fukuurabashi bridge. Nice little temple after a small balancing act on the bridges leading up to it. There is a small gift shop just after the entrance, and you can do a loop around the temple to come back the way you came.

As always, I love all the red bridges that lead to the temple. You’re very close to the harbor where the sightseeing cruises leave, so you can watch the boats from here if that’s your thing.
