Higashiyama walking course
1-chōme-ほか Tenshōjimachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0832, Japan
The walking course takes the visitor through a good number of historical temples and shrines which were built or relocated by the Kanamori rulers, generations of feudal lords reigning the Hida region during the Sengoku period in Japan. In particular, Daioji temple, which collapsed due to a typhoon, was rebuilt by a skilled carpenter in 1807. There you’ll also find the oldest belfry in the Hida region which was built in 1689. Don’t forget to halt your steps to admire the marvels of craftsmanship.

Best place in town with not much tourists and great view. If you start from the temple area, there are more than 10 temples and graveyards to view. You can’t really go inside but it’s nice to just see around. On the east side, which is the shiroyama park, it is said to have wild bear and a couple of wildlife but we didn’t spot it during the day. The park is huge, more like a reserved jungly area. There’s no right or wrong direction as all paths in the park is connected to each other. It takes about 2h to complete the course but if you are short of time, you can go to the temple areas, go back to the cbd area to see the merchants and tourists lanes and go back up to the Shiroyama park, as in between the temples and park there are nothing much to see. Plenty of clean western toilets along the way. There are some parts that are steep but overall it’s an easy walk. Beware of the wooden signages, they are really confusing, best to see the map signs and stick with it, in saying that if you get lost, just backtrack a bit.

Beautiful path meandering Takayama that takes you along a trail of temples and shrines. Some of the temples and shrines are beautiful and peacefully set in nature. The trail is very well indicated. Better and much less crowded than the Philosopher's Path in Kyoto.

Highly recommend if you are visiting Takayama. This is the best marked trail I have seen in Japan, signs everywhere so you know where to go. It was pretty quiet when I was there so you can actually enjoy the walk. It takes about two hours but maybe a bit more if you take some time to enjoy and take some pictures.

Nice walking course which takes you past 10+ temples and shrines, and through the park. Signage is clear along the full route, there are public restrooms available and some water taps. Takes perhaps 3 hours to complete.

A good combination of movement and (religious) culture. The Higashiyama Walking Course takes the walker past 13 temples and 5 Shinto shrines to finally end at Shiroyama Park. A most beautiful and peaceful walk!
