This merchant's house was designated an Important Cultural Asset in 1994 as the best of Takaoka's earthen-walled townhouses in terms of scale, quality, and level of preservation. The walls are finished with black plaster, and the second floor has a set of double doors. The roof has a boxed ridge, as well, and all of these are hallmarks of Takaoka earthen-walled town house construction. The Sugano family built a vast family fortune from the beginning of the Meiji period when the fifth generation head, Denemon, began trading on routes to Hokkaido.

Since I visited early in the morning, I was not able to go inside. The Kanno family residence has been designated as a national important cultural property. It's a wonderful building with a solid feel.

The interior is extremely luxurious, with Yaku cedar and Kitayama cedar being used, and glazed bricks on the walls. Also, the Buddhist altar here is finely crafted and shiny with gold, and you will be amazed at its luxury and splendor. It is highly recommended as you can get a glimpse of the glorious life of a wealthy merchant that cannot be seen from the outside!

Currently, there are valuable items that may never be seen again. The Japanese houses of wealthy merchants will instantly transport you to the wonderful life of the graceful era that flourished at that time. It was a shame that there was a place where I could see such valuable items and I didn't know about them. The red alcove and the custom-made chandelier in the transom are precious things that cannot be replaced with money. Above all, I didn't know if the administrator would show me something, but I was shown something wonderful that I'll never see again. That's a secret I've kept since I left (lol)
