Wow, I've visited once before but at night for the light up. This Temple was incredible. Steeped in history and culture. The monk was attentive and sincere. Atmosphere was other-worldly. Love it! Would love to go back and spend more time there.

a very nice temple complex, but when we arrived only a few areas were open to the public. all the wooden buildings are gorgeous, with many refined structural details, even from a distance. the sand garden is one of the signatures of the temple; luckily, we had a chance to see it from the entrance.

Jotenji Temple in Fukuoka is temple of Zen's school Buddhism, and in Japan it is defined as Rinzai school's Tofukuji sect. It was believed that the Temple was built in 1242, although it was expanded and renovated few times with Korean Buddhism influence. The Temple has an excellent beautiful Zen stone garden which is generally NOT open the public, except a few religious days. But the worshippers or visitors can see them from the side door of Jotenji-dori [avenue]. For visitors, they can really find tranquility and beauty in the Temple zone or field block, even without being able to enter the garden, because it doesn't have many visitors even in weekends.

I personally loved the night show this temple had to over for Hakata night walk from November 1st to November 5th. I think it had the greatest display of colors and had a very peaceful and comfortable feeling to it! I would highly recommend anyone come here to this temple during the day or at night. I don't know how this temple looks on a normal night, but tonight, it was absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this temple for everyone to come and see!
