Kengun Shrine is the oldest shrine in Kumamoto City, and was originally named Takemiya Shrine. The most unique part of the shrine is the 1200m-long approach path that runs from the torii entrance gate on Densha-Dori all the way to the main compound. The cedar trees that line part of this road are thought to have been planted during the era of Kato Kiyomasa, around the turn of the 17th century. Kengun Shrine is one of the most popular places during the New Year season as many visitors from the surrounding areas come to Kengun to wish for good fortune in the coming year.

Beautiful shrine with lots of history behind. In fact the very first, oldest shrine in Kumamoto City. The family in charge is very welcoming and keen to speak about the history of the temple with visitors. I had the luck to see them around at 7:30am on a weekday and amazingly enough some of them could also speak a bit of English. Everyone was lovely, definitely a must-visit landmark to anyone travelling to Kumamoto! Kengun Shrine holds an special place in my heart🩷🙏🏼✨

One of the oldest shrines, if not the oldest, in Kumamoto. A very wonderful place to visit and pray. It also has some food venders as well.

One of the main shrines in Kumamoto—this is a popular one to go to for births, weddings, 7-5-3, your new car, and to ring in the new year.

Very traditional shrine. It stands as Kumamoto's oldest traditional shrine. You can also partake in the rituals, but if you do, don't forget to cleanse first. The staff do not speak english but are very accomodating. Definitely a must go place if you visit Kumamoto.

One of the most beautiful shrines in all of Japan. 🇯🇵 If you live or are visiting Kumamoto, then you owe it to yourself to visit this lovely place at least once in your life.
