Before the lecture, there is a meditation experience. After the lecture, we were given a tour and explanation of the temple grounds by Unsui-sama. It was a small group, and right after the lecture, I was able to take a photo with Professor Owada, which was very moving! ️ I spent a meaningful half day there. thank you very much. Rinzaiji is a temple with monks in training. Normally, you cannot go inside the building. It's worth it just to see the exterior of the building and the garden.

After seeing what Ieyasu would do and learning that there was a room where Ieyasu studied, I became interested in Rinzaiji, so I went there on a special day when it was open to the public. The monks were all kind and I was interested in this historic temple. The tea room relocated from Kyoto was also very nice. I felt like I had traveled back in time to the era of Ieyasu, and I wanted to go to see it when it opens next year.

Rinzaiji Temple was worshiped by military commanders who ruled Suruga, from the Imagawa family to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The color of the wood, the beautiful gate, and the Nio statues make it worth seeing. It's just a temple for training, so you can't go inside the main hall, but you can go outside.

Great place, very spiritual. Guide was incredible. Very detailed and full of facts. All in English. If given another chance I would definitely come back and visit the place. The only thing you must remember you will not be allowed every time. Research beforehand.

I will visit Rinzai-ji whenever I visit Shizuoka. It has a feeling of absolute peace, that only Zen Temples have. It has a beautiful garden, including some rock gardens. Just sit and enjoy the feeling for about half an hour. I first went because of its historical importance. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man who united Japan and established the Tokugawa Shogunate was lodged in Shizuoka as a hostage for his family's good behaviour as a young boy and returned to Sumpu (Shizuoka) in his 'retirement' and built a huge castle in the center of town. It was at this temple that he was lodged as a young boy. He came of age at the more-frequently visited but less impressive, nearby Shrine.
