Ryufukuji Temple
119 Ōdonoōji, Yamaguchi, 753-0093, Japan
This Rinzai sect temple was constructed in 1206. Originally called "Hoshuzan Zuiunji Temple" it was located in Shiraishi but was rebuilt in 1336 and became the family temple of Hironao Ouchi. The present main temple was rebuilt in 1883 after repeated being lost. As a representative temple building of the Muromachi period (1336-1573), it became a nationally-designated important cultural property in 1954. Both sides of the shrine path are lined with maple trees, and in autumn, it is famous as a spot for looking at autumn leaves because of the vividly colored tunnels formed by the trees. The site also houses the Ryufukuji Museum, which exhibits images of Yoshitaka Ouchi.

Most of the temple grounds are said to be the remains of the Ouchi clan residence, and are quite large. When I first arrived at the west gate, I was confused as to where to enter. The main hall has been designated as an important cultural property, and was rebuilt on the site of the Ouchi clan mansion, which was used as the family temple of Yoshitaka Ouchi by the former Duke Mori Takashi. The feeling on the approach was very nice.

This is my favorite autumn foliage spot in the prefecture. The autumn leaves that can be seen at the end of the autumn foliage season, covering the approach to the shrine, are absolutely beautiful.

This is a temple located on the site of the Ouchi clan residence. There are several free tourist parking lots nearby. Since it is located on the site of the historic Ouchi clan mansion, there are restored gardens in the surrounding area, so we recommend that you take a look around as well. I received the goshuin stamp at the temple office on the right side of the main hall.

Temple complex situated within beautiful and peaceful grounds. Autumnal browns and oranges, contrasting against the last of the summer’s green flourish. Well maintained and designed. Enter via the east side of the complex.
