More than the temple itself, the grounds is home to an extensive market selling local goods such as craft, produce, and food. There's lots to see and prices are generally reasonable. You can also visit the temple to receive blessings or listen in to religious sessions

Add this place to your list! All over Japan, you will find temples, castles and old houses in the middle of modern buildings and more contemporary houses. In Kyoto, the old capital, it’s full of temples from different buddhist schools. It’s an easy walk from Kyoto Eki and it worth going for a quick visit.

Toji Temple is under-rated. I entered through the back gate so you have to go to front to pay the Y800 but well worth it. Cash only, no credit or Suica cards. You can go in to a few of the temples to see the buddhas. The Pagoda is huge. You cannot take photos inside the temples just outside. They have a lot of staff walking around to enforce no photography.

Tōji temple looks so beautiful and easy to get to, walkable from Kyoto station, and there are city buses that will stop in front of the temple. The Pagoda, temple and landscape are all great to watch. The architecture with the brown/orange facade is actually a bathroom. It is so cool, isn't it?

One won't be able to cover all temples in Kyoto if staying for 2-3days. Do select a few. Highly recommend this temple to visit. Big, serene, peaceful and beautiful landscapes. Walking distance from Kyoto main station. You can read more about the history of the temple on Wiki
