A quaint temple with a peaceful and quiet environment. Free to enter however photography is unfortunately not allowed.

Beautiful temple that served as an asylum for divorced women in the past. The graveyard in the back is one of the most astonishing in all of Kamakura, especially in late Autumn when the leaves of its maples turn red. The graveyard is also home to the remains of some famous figures such as the Kyoto School philosopher Nishida Kitaro. Free entrance.

I entered the temple grounds quietly to look around and took some photos of the flowers. Suddenly, a woman approached me, she was not a staff member but just another visitor. She yelled at me and told me that I'm not allowed to take photos. I later saw a "no photo sign" in the middle of the temple but there is no indication of this restriction at the entrance gate. I wanted to spend a peaceful time but it looks like people here are unfriendly and lack compassion. I felt disappointed since I was at a temple. I don’t think it’s harmful for the flowers to have their picture taken if the photographer is gentle and doesn’t destroy the plant. I don't know why she as so unfriendly and rude. The temple itself is lovely, small and quiet but I won't come again as I didn’t feel welcome.

Tokei-ji temple in Kamakura is a captivating destination with a unique feature—the hauntingly beautiful graveyard. This historic temple served as a sanctuary for women seeking divorce during feudal times. The serene cemetery, adorned with moss-covered tombstones, evokes a sense of tranquility and reflection. A remarkable place that intertwines history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

Good tourist attraction, if you are around Kamakura, and want to do the shrine run all around, ensure to cover this shrine, if interested in a hill trail, you can travel from this place to the Buddha Statue(Kotuko-in). It will take you around 45 minutes, but highly recommended. Remember to wear your good hiking or sports shoes! Enjoy.
