Part of the shrine is currently being rebuilt. Yusuhara Hachimangu Shrine is a shrine located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, and is considered the Ichinomiya of Bungo Province. The deities enshrined are Emperor Chuai, Emperor Ojin, and Empress Jingu. It was built in the 4th year of Tencho (827) in the early Heian period as a branch spiritual site of Usa Hachimangu Shrine. A huge camphor tree with a trunk circumference of 18.5 meters, said to be approximately 3,000 years old, is located within the grounds and has been designated as a national natural monument.

Bungokuni Ichinomiya Yusuhara Hachimangu Shrine, I gave up on going up the stairs from the Chozuya and warped to the top by car. The main shrine is undergoing renovation and will be covered by an enclosure until 2020. There was a very nice chief priest. I was able to go up to the magnificent precincts and worship. There was a big drum, and we were allowed to put money in it and play it. It was my first experience and it was amazing. It's on top of a mountain and feels very comfortable. I would like to visit again when it is clean.

I love to visit this Shrine by bike, it's a real challenge in the middle of nature and countryside. Either you can get from this Oita to Beppu back to the Monkey mountain. Perfect for reconnection with oneself through a sport trip.

Old shrine with beautiful forest surrounding it and a 3000 year old tree. A cool place to visit especially in summer!
