Notes

Nanzoin Temple is a large complex with many chapels and shrines scattered over the hillside. Nanzoin was moved here in 1899 from Mount Koya, the huge temple complex in Wakayama that is the headquarters of the Shingon sect. There is an impressively large Fudo Myo-o statue as well as 500 statues of the Buddha's disciples, also an Inari Shrine and a shrine dedicated to the Shichifukujin, the seven lucky gods of Japan. Nanzoin Temple in also home to a huge statue of the Reclining Buddha (Nehanzo), same size as New York's Statue of Liberty and thought to be the longest existing bronze Buddha statue in the world. Kashii-gu Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. According to legend, Empress Jingu had a shrine built in the year 200 in honor of her husband, Emperor Chuai, who died here. Several centuries later, the shrine was also dedicated to Empress Jingu and Emperor Ojin, the son of Emperor Chuai and Empress Jingu, and came to be known as Kashii-gu.
