Autumn is definitely the best season to visit this temple. Expect a short waiting time to buy tickets and a huge crowd when you get inside. Best to go here early if you want less people around. Main buildings are connected by wooden corridors so make sure to spot where the entry point starts. Hojo Pond has an island in the middle which contains a very small shrine. There's also a nice 2-storey pagoda within this temple.

One of my favourite temples from my whole trip. The autumn colours here were fantastic, and the site has some amazingly decorated buildings to wander through. The gardens have a nice wandering path that allows you to take in the whole scenery peacefully, and there is also a small rest stop next to the pond where you can enjoy a small snack and pot of tea.

Great Buddhist temple to visit! It's probably one of the most scenic Buddhist temple in the area. The landscaping was beautiful with its mapple trees which were in their captivating red. The temple was amazingly tranquil regardless of the big number of visitors from across the world. Don't miss this one after your walk at the thoughts provoking path of philosophy. You may not attained enlightenment but you should be to acquire some peace and happiness from this visit. A very worthy visit whether you are a Buddhist or no.

I must say this is one of the best place to enjoy autumn foliage in Kyoto. The colours are vibrant and unreal. Landscaping is top notch with beautiful temple building with traditional Japanese architecture. There is a viewing area offering the view of the whole place. Crowd is manageable even on weekday. Recommend to visit in a sunny morning. Made a video on it comparing with other autumn foliage sites: https://youtu.be/RxlsAcieFtI?feature=shared

Beautiful temple garden. Autumn colours have already started to show during late October. We went on 30 Oct. It’s one of the earliest temples to have fall colours in Kyoto. A must see if you want to see autumn foliage. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate. The actual temple is very serene but there are many steps if you want to visit the higher viewing platforms and pagoda. There’s lift to access the higher platforms.
